The last official match of Roger Federer remains the semifinals of the Australian Open 2020 against Novak Djokovic. After losing to the Serb in three sets, Federer underwent two operations, both on his right knee: the first in February, the second in June.
The 20-time Grand Slam winner was supposed to return to the ATP Cup in 2021, but something changed shortly before the start. Indeed, Federer has decided to skip the Australian season in order to recover 100% from the injury and physically and not spend too much time outside of his family.
According to the latest updates, Federer is expected to return to the field in Doha, the ATP 250 tournament that will take place March 8-13. This was explained by Richard Krajicek, the current director of the Rotterdam tournament.
“I think Roger will play in Doha a week after Rotterdam. But only if he is actually fit and ready to play. He’ll have to tell us. ”

Many colleagues have been waiting to see Federer on the pitch and have spoken of his absence.
In particular, Fabio Fognini made some statements on the official ATP website. “I would love to see Roger Federer on the pitch because I’m a huge fan of his,” said the Italian tennis player.

Even a champion like Rafael Nadal had expressed words of great admiration for his friend after winning Roland Garros for the thirteenth time.
“I hope he comes back as soon as possible. We can’t fool ourselves: we don’t have ten years from Federer and it’s a bad thing when he can’t play. He’s one of the greatest icons of our sport and it is bad for everyone to let him off.
“Nadal will be one of the main favorites at the next edition of the Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of the year will be played in a very special way from February 8-21.
