Tencent takes majority stake in Don’t Starve developer Klei | NOW

The Chinese tech giant Tencent has bought a majority stake in Klei Entertainment, the Canadian maker of survival game Don’t Starve in Mark of the Ninja. That made Klei Entertainment Friday night known.

Tencent is the market leader in the Chinese game sector and has more often bought shares in Western game companies from the middle and higher segment in recent years. For example, the company has a large share in Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite.

In a blog post, Clay founder Jaime Cheng writes that this step “allows us to better maneuver ourselves through a changing industry”. Tencent will not influence the management of Clay or the projects the studio chooses, Cheng said.

Partly for this reason, Klei has chosen to work with the Chinese company.
Clay Entertainment is a mid-range game maker. Clay games are known for being cartoonish and deliberately exaggerated artstyle, and are generally well received by critics.
