At least one person was injured Saturday night in a Washington state city after a police car lunged at a group of pedestrians attending an urban race, according to the Tacoma News-Tribune.
The incident occurred shortly before 7:00 p.m., when a hundred people looked at several cars turning in circles on a street in downtown Tacoma, police told the newspaper.
A police car arrived at the scene and lunged into the crowd as people tried to block the vehicle, according to a witness.
Videos shared on social media showed the police car running over something or someone. Another video of the scene shared on Twitter appeared to show the vehicle hitting a person on the ground.
Police received a tip about a street race shortly before 7:00 p.m., Tacoma police spokeswoman Wendy Haddow told the News-Tribune.
The agent used his car horn to alert the crowd, the spokeswoman said. Then people started banging on the windows.
That caused the agent to rush out of the scene for his own safety, he added. One person sustained cuts in the collision and was taken to a hospital.
The implicated agent will be put on administrative leave, city manager Elizabeth Pauli said. The Pierce County Police Investigation Team will investigate the case, Pauli said.
