Freiburg – With a lot of luck, SC Freiburg continued to fly high at the start of the second half of the Bundesliga. The Breisgauer won 2-1 (2-1) in the Baden-Württemberg duel against VfB Stuttgart. The SC has only received one defeat (2-1 at Bayern Munich) in the last ten games and scored 21 points in this phase.
The strong Bosnian Ermedin Demirovic (14th) and the South Korean Woo-Yeong Jeong (37th) scored for the sports club (27 points), which won a home game against their Swabian rivals for the first time since November 2012.
The newcomer from Stuttgart (22 counters), on the other hand, has only won one of the past seven games and is in the low. The goal of the Congolese Silas Wamangituka (7th) did not change anything. Nicolas Gonzalez failed with a penalty kick against Freiburg goalkeeper Florian Müller (45th).
Demirovic equalizes Freiburg
At the ghost game in the Black Forest Stadium it wasn’t long before the first excitement. After Daniel Didavi from Stuttgart initially failed due to Müller, Wamangituka took off. However, it took a while until the initially valid offside decision by video referee Florian Badstübner (Windsbach) was canceled. It was Wamangituka’s tenth goal of the season.
The Freiburg team, who were missing Roland Sallai, Baptiste Santamaria, Mark Flekken and Chang-Hoon Kwon, did not let the early deficit thwart them. Just seven minutes later, Demirovic equalized with a deflected shot. Jeong had a good chance before that (12th).
Even after the equalization, the game did not calm down. Both teams continued to play courageously forward, in both penalty areas it was always dangerous. The entertainment value of the encounter was extremely high. In the middle of the first half it was mainly the hosts who were close to the second goal.
Stenzel makes mistakes
Towards the end of the first half, VfB got stronger again, Gonzalez had a good chance (37th). Seconds later, however, the goal was marked by Jeong on the other side after a gross mistake by Stuttgart defender Pascal Stenzel, who was replaced during the break.
But that was still not the exciting first round. Gonzalez was allowed to run from the point after a foul by Janik Haberer on the highly dangerous Wamangituka. His penalty was a return, however.
At the beginning of the second half, the guests increased the number of strokes again, coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team pushed for an equalizer. The Argentine Gonzalez (55th) again missed the best chance in this phase. Even after about an hour, Freiburg was only rarely able to break free, the goal for VfB was in the air. Erik Thommy (87th) and Gonzalez (90th) hit the post.
