Having survived Corona does not mean that you can train fully again. Doctors strongly recommend that those who have recovered should wait before returning to sport. In this context, they also warn against underestimating mild Covid 19 courses.
Mild or symptom-free courses of the disease are particularly tricky. This threatens to overestimate oneself, to see Corona as over and to rush to return to sport. Sports cardiologist Prof. Martin Halle from the Technical University of Munich warns of this.

Wait to return to sport after Corona
Under no circumstances should recreational athletes get back into training too quickly after surviving Covid 19 disease. Otherwise, this could bring an increased risk of heart muscle inflammation or cardiac arrhythmia, warns Halle.
He reports from his practical work. Many athletes told him that they could not get back on their feet after their corona infection. A return to sport is then hardly conceivable.

Palpitations and shortness of breath – serious warning signals
Palpitations or shortness of breath under stress are two of the symptoms that have been found in sports enthusiasts after the illness, according to the professor. From experience with other infections such as influenza, one knows how dangerous it is if one does not cure them thoroughly. The virus can penetrate faster and deeper into the airways and multiply there more strongly. A hasty return to sport could then cause “massive damage”, explains Halle.

He appeals: “Even after surviving Covid-19 illness, caution is advised.” Too little is known about whether consequential damage is permanent or whether longer regeneration is necessary.
How long should the sports break be?
To give you an idea of when you can consider returning to sport after Corona, she says Preventive sports medicine and sports cardiology from the Technical University of Munich the following time windows:
If you have no symptoms, you should not exercise for at least two weeks. In the case of a mild course with cough or fever, you should avoid sport for at least two, but preferably up to four weeks from the onset of symptoms.
With inflammation of the lungs it is at least one month, with heart muscle inflammation it is at least three months – the course should also be monitored cardiologically.

Play it safe – with a doctor check-up
At the same time, the specialist center emphasizes: the sports break does not provide complete security. In order to rule out possible health risks even more reliably, it is advisable to have a thorough check-up with a doctor before going back to work.
