(pd) The Swiss Trade Association (sgv) demands that the vocational schools remain open in any case, even if they close from secondary level II: “Practical knowledge cannot be imparted via distance learning The sgv continues to call on schools to motivate young people to do a trial apprenticeship. The companies are ready! “
In a position paper, the board of the largest umbrella organization of the Swiss economy demands that the vocational schools and centers remain open for inter-company courses. This also applies if the cantons prohibit classroom teaching from upper secondary level. Practical knowledge can only be imparted in face-to-face classes. If the schools remain open, qualification procedures, i.e. final apprenticeship exams and partial exams, can be carried out regularly and young professionals are not burdened with the mortgage of a “Corona apprenticeship”.
In times of crisis, the economy is more dependent on skilled workers than ever. When it comes to training as a skilled worker, higher vocational training is the ideal solution. Here, too, practical preparation courses and degree programs are not always possible via distance learning. However, it is imperative that these courses continue to be held.
The fear that is often rumored that too few apprenticeship positions would be offered because of the company closures has not come true. The companies are ready and offer enough apprenticeships. However, other problems emerged after the lockdown in spring. In the elementary school, the career choice process was interrupted because the vocational orientation in distance learning was not conveyed and job fairs etc. no longer took place. Fewer young people also applied, probably unsettled by poorly positive media reports. The sgv therefore calls on the schools to motivate the young people again for a trial apprenticeship. Trial apprenticeships are an important tool in the career choice process.
