SPORT ⋅ The 30th Winter Universiade should have opened in Lucerne on January 21, 2021 – but then the pandemic interfered. Preparations for the second attempt are now underway.
(that) The cancellation followed last August: the Winter Universiade in January 2021 was out of the question due to Corona. An alternative date for the student strength test was finally announced in November: The second largest multisport event in winter is now to take place from December 11th to 21st. The work has already picked up speed again, as Managing Director Urs Hunkeler explains on request: We are currently in the process of finalizing the agreements with our partners – for example sponsors, suppliers, event locations. Thanks to the preparatory work last year, things are going well, says Hunkeler. In addition, many of our partners are also affected by the corona measures and, like us, hope that it will work out the second time.
We are looking for over 3,500 volunteers
Hunkeler is also hoping that the people of Central Switzerland will be enthusiastic about the Universiade. It would also help with the next big step: the volunteer platform will be activated again at the beginning of May. More than 3,500 volunteers are needed so that the sports festival with 1,600 athletes can take place.
A budget of around CHF 39 million is available for the Winter Universiade with the host city of Lucerne. In addition to the city of Lucerne, the venues are the Stoos, Andermatt, Engelberg, Zug, Sursee and Lenzerheide.
