The abuse of any food can lead to health problems. In some cases, the abuse of certain foods can also lead to serious problems, as in the case of dried fruit. This is why excessive consumption of dried fruit can be dangerous to health.
Research on a component of dried fruit questions the benefits of this food
The benefits of dried fruit are known to many. Less known are the health risks associated with its excessive consumption. Dried fruit, like cauliflower and broccoli, are foods rich in plant sterols. These have always been recognized as health-friendly elements, as they promote the reduction of bad cholesterol.
But there is a study from a Japanese clinic, and published in the journal Journal of the American College of Cardiology, which contradicts this thesis. This research was inspired by some researchers of the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University and of the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome. They wanted to verify the findings of the Japanese clinical team’s research.
Because excessive consumption of dried fruit can be dangerous for your health
Japanese researchers have verified that the excessive presence of plant sterols in the diet creates the risk of heart attack. In practice, they found that reducing the presence of plant sterols in the blood reduces atherosclerosis and consequently also the risk of heart attack. It follows, therefore, that increasing plant sterols in the blood can reduce bad cholesterol but increase heart problems.
This conclusion was also confirmed by the Italian researchers. Starting from the research data of Japanese colleagues, researchers from the Italian University have verified that plant sterols reduce blood cholesterol.
Thanks to these fatty substances there is a reduction of cholesterol absorption by 10%. Unfortunately, however, the increase in plant sterols in the blood could be deleterious, because it would promote the risk of heart attack.
Other disorders created by abuse
Excessive use of nuts also leads to other health ailments. First of all, the caloric richness of the food leads to gaining weight. In addition, it is a fruit rich in fructose, which sticks to the teeth, creating possible caries problems.
Finally, overuse of dried fruit can create digestive upset. Gastrointestinal problems such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea can occur with excessive consumption.
