Lawyer, business and public affairs management

On January 19, the Master of Business Law at the University of Lima organized the virtual talk “The lawyer and politics (s): helping our internal clients navigate legal and political uncertainty.” The speaker was Mario Zúñiga, professor of our master’s degree, member of Ernst & Young Law, lawyer from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and master’s degree in Regulation and Public Policy from The George Washington University Law School (United States).

The speaker pointed out that a global trend is the increase in regulatory initiatives by the public sector, which generates impacts on markets and companies. In this context, companies need the services of specialists in the management of public affairs, including lawyers.

The expert added that, among the competencies and skills required to perform this role, are multidisciplinary research, understanding of the business, effective communication, knowledge of political cycles and processes, writing skills, skills to external communication, and understanding of legal regulations and institutions.

Likewise, Zúñiga indicated that he is a teacher of the Economic Analysis of Law course in our Master’s Degree in Business Law, in which questions such as the following are asked: what does a regulation say? What impact will it have on the market and organizations? How can the same goal be achieved in a company at a reasonable cost?

In addition, this course addresses topics such as the use of microeconomics in the analysis of legal institutions or a basic analytical framework that serves to determine the impact of public policies. In the same way, the importance of thinking beyond the law and supporting arguments with empirical evidence is highlighted.
