Summary:
The study aims to determine the effectiveness of nursing counseling in understanding breast cancer. The study is prospective with a quasi-experimental design, with pretest and posttest analyzed in two groups. The study population consisted of 233 women from the oncology outpatient clinic, between 20 and 60 years old, and a sample of 68 users divided into two groups, 34 for the control group and 34 for the experimental group. To collect data, a structured questionnaire validated with Cronbach’s alpha was used as an instrument, whose value was 0.852, with high reliability. The results show that the knowledge that the users have in the pretest, for the control group, a mean of 8.68 (SD = 2.5) was obtained and for the experimental group, a mean of 8.91 (SD = 2.12). After having undergone nursing counseling in the intervened group, knowledge about breast cancer for the experimental group was good, with a mean of 15,971 (SD = 1,527) and for the post-test in the control group the mean was 8.85 (SD = 2.23). It is concluded that nursing counseling regarding knowledge about breast cancer is effective (p = 0.000 <0.05), in women between 20 and 60 years of age who attended the outpatient oncology clinic of the Manuel Núñez Butron Regional Hospital in the city of Puno.
