Former television presenter Frank Masmeijer, who is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence in Belgium, has filed a request for early release. A spokesperson for the East Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office confirms this on Wednesday Show news.
A judge will consider the request from the former NCRV celebrity next month. “On February 9, 2021, this case will be brought before the criminal enforcement court in Ghent. Whether the person concerned will be able to leave prison in the context of a provisional release will therefore depend on the decision of the criminal enforcement court,” said the public prosecutor.
The 59-year-old presenter was convicted in June 2019 for his role in the smuggling of a large batch of cocaine in 2014. The conviction also involved participation in a criminal organization and forgery.
For a long time Masmeijer denied that he had anything to do with drug smuggling, but said at the end of 2018 that he played a “limited role” in an attempt to smuggle 467 kilos of cocaine from Colombia via the port of Antwerp.
