Education, police and justice: country plans additional jobs | NDR.de – news

Status: January 20, 2021 6:11 p.m.

Schleswig-Holstein wants to create a total of 474 additional jobs. Finance Minister Monika Heinold calculates additional costs of around 25 million euros per year.

The staff is to be increased, especially in the areas of education, digitization, young police officers and the judiciary. Monika Heinold said that she had considered for a long time whether it was right to create additional positions. In the end it was clear that now was the right time, said the Green politician. “A strong state administration is our answer to the crisis.” The country needs more staff, especially in schools. “We must continue to digitize and provide support where we can fully exploit the strengths of our country,” said Heinold.

250 new jobs are to strengthen the school system

The government wants to strengthen education with 250 of the additional positions from the “replacement list” in order to support the digitization of teaching and the Institute for Quality Development in Schools (IQSH). The Ministry of Education will announce the details. It is already clear, however, that 23 positions are planned for the training of junior staff. Heinold described the challenges in schools and in administration as huge, and the abundance of tasks had increased significantly. “The pandemic shows us in full force that we need a state capable of acting. That can only be achieved with more staff,” said the finance minister.

Many state employees will retire in the next few years

Heinold explained that in the next ten years around a third of the state’s employees will be retiring, which is why the creation of new jobs in a financially difficult phase is responsible: “Now is the right time to get young people into the public service win.” In the previous draft budget, the state had planned 327 new posts for the police, justice and tax administration.

GEW satisfied, approval from the SPD

The Education and Science Union (GEW) thinks it is good that additional jobs are being created in the field of education and digital teaching – where there is a need. The President of the State Audit Office, Gaby Schäfer, also sees it. But from their point of view, such a high increase in jobs does not fit in with future funding gaps that need to be closed. While AfD MP Jörg Nobis speaks of a waste of tax money, the SPD and the government groups approve.
