Bangkok: A woman has been sentenced to 43 years in prison in Thailand. He was arrested for allegedly supporting the ongoing agitation in the country against the monarchy. Anchan, a former government official, was jailed by the Thai government in 2015. The sentence was reduced from 87 years to 43 years. He was found guilty of posting defamatory remarks against the Thai royal family on social media.
But the explanation is that he only shared an audio message that came to him. Anchan said in an apology that he did not know the content of the audio message was critical of the royal family. Anchan was first arrested in 2015, a year before he was due to retire.
The apology was later reduced to 43 years. Insulting a king or queen or their descendants is a heinous crime in Thailand. Each offense carries a maximum sentence of three to 15 years in prison.
