RB Leipzigs Nagelsmann: “Football can learn a lot from football”

Leipzig. What is known everywhere in America as “football” is known to be very different from what the rest of the world understands by the English word. It has precious little to do with football: the ball isn’t a ball, it looks more like an egg, and people don’t play with their feet. So not all American football is the same. The sport has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years, even among non-American viewers and fans.

Among them is a very specific soccer coach. Because RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann got infected: “Our team manager Timmo Hardung is an ardent fan of the Green Bay Packers.” The 33-year-old did not reveal on Monday whether the team is also his favorite. The Packers won their last game in the National Football League (NFL) at the weekend against the Los Angeles Rams with 32:18. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers around superstar Tom Brady are now waiting for the Conference Final. “I wouldn’t be averse if you get into the Super Bowl and win it. But I’m not sad if another team does it. ”In general, Nagelsmann thinks American football is an interesting sport. Can you also copy something from there?

“I think so, and a lot. Not just me as a coach, but also the players, ”says the RBL coach. Footballers could learn a lot from their football colleagues, especially when it comes to discipline. “Learning the playbook is a point at which you can also make progress in football,” says Nagelsmann. In the playbooks – there are some for offensive, defensive and special teams – all moves are explained that a team would like to use in the course of a season. These have to be practiced by the respective players on the one hand in training, but on the other hand they have to be learned by heart.

The quarterback in particular has a lot of responsibility on the broad shoulders of football. “He stands above everything and has to know everything perfectly by heart. He’s almost the trainer on the field, coaches and announces, but always in connection with the head coach or the offensive coordinator, ”explains Nagelsmann. Basically, there are many moves and terms in football and every player must understand them and know what it is about. Those who cannot go along cannot hope for a contract extension. “It quickly gets tight for the boys.” Because with a few exceptions for particularly well-known players (especially the quarterbacks), the players in the NFL often only have one-year contracts. “If you don’t deliver, you will no longer have a contract at the end of the season,” explains the Bullen coach. “As a player, you have to constantly push your limits, regardless of the position you’re playing.”

In addition to the discipline in terms of content, Nagelsmann also wants one or the other trick game: “That worked very well in the playoffs.” In his opinion, football could also draw from this source of inspiration. “If an NFL coach ever feels like talking to me – feel free to contact me,” laughs Nagelsmann.
