New York: Artist couple draws attention to endangered species with a gorilla statue

Some crawl on it, others sit in its hand: a gigantic gorilla sculpture attracts everyone’s attention in New York. It was set up by an artist couple. With the work entitled “King Nyani”, the British-Australian artist duo known as “Gillie and Marc” wants to promote the protection of this endangered species.

In a park in western Manhattan, the sculpture, which shows a lying gorilla, immediately became a popular photo opportunity. Children and adults mainly posed in the animal’s right hand, which it holds in front of its body.

This is not the first time that the artist couple has drawn attention to species protection. A few years ago the duo had already commemorated the fate of the last few specimens of the northern white rhinoceros with a rhinoceros sculpture on a New York square.
