Thirty-six positive people: 13 health workers, 23 patients admitted to the ward of Medicine. Within five days the second outbreak broke out inside the Cardarelli hospital in Campobasso it almost doubled from the point of view of the number of infections: last January 13 22 had been ascertained. In the meantime, the health company ran for cover by imposing some restrictions decided by the health director Maria Virginia Scafarto: positive patients have been transferred to Infectious Diseases, family visits have been interrupted and outpatient activities have been blocked. For emergencies, Scafarto had always ‘ordered’ the 118 operations center to sort non-covid patients in the spoke hospitals of Isernia and Termoli. The medical department was also sanitized.
The containment measures of the virus, however, were not sufficient. Today (January 18), following the results of the molecular swabs to which patients and health workers of the Medicine Department were subjected ascertained three new diagnoses of positivity to the virus – two nurses and an auxiliary – as reported to Primonero from sources within the hospital.
The total count of the infected therefore rises to 36 including the head physician Ennio Lubrano, the head nurse, two doctors, eight nurses and an auxiliary, as well as 23 patients who have contracted the new coronavirus.
There is no doubt: the expansion of the outbreak in medicine, the second in the hospital of Campobasso after the one that broke out in Surgery, scares more and more. The spread of the virus in the Cardarelli, a mixed hospital as it treats both covid and non-covid patients, seems to be progressive and risks throwing a hospital on the verge of failure.
The hospital of the capital is going through another ‘black’ period from the point of view of hospitalizations for covid: never so many. The infectious disease and intensive care wards are back to being super-crowded: they are treated here 70 people who developed covid. The same number of last December 4, when the second wave of the epidemic could probably be considered winding down.
Then came the restrictions and the Christmas lockdown just to avoid the third wave which perhaps we are approaching. And this time, with the surge in new hospitalizations and the effects of the two outbreaks, Cardarelli really risks ‘exploding’.
