Samsung wants to convert its old phones into baby monitors, through the new Galaxy Upcycling program, which updates old Galaxy phones to give them new features.
Most Android phones do not last as long as they should be, although this is slowly changing, but it does not help the old, abandoned devices that exist.
In 2017, the company introduced the Galaxy Upcycling program, which provides consumers with the ability to reuse an old Galaxy smart phone for new purposes.
Through the program, Samsung engineers worked to develop ways to reuse the company’s old smartphones for new IoT purposes, in the hope of helping reduce Samsung’s contribution to e-waste around the world.
Samsung has now announced an update to its Galaxy Upcycling software called Galaxy Upcycling at Home.
The new software reimagines the life cycle of an old Galaxy phone and offers consumers options on how to reuse their devices to create a variety of convenient IoT gadgets.
Samsung says: An optional software update will be available for these older devices that provide new features to allow them to be used for home purposes.
The company indicated three use cases, such as the possibility of using phones as baby monitors, by placing the phone on a charger in the room with the infant, and a special program can detect a child’s crying and send notifications to other devices.
Samsung Knox can also play a role in making these devices useful for home security purposes, and some pet care features are thrilled, as the device can detect low light and turn on smart lighting inside the home using the SmartThings app.
Samsung didn’t go into details about which devices are eligible for this or exactly how software updates will arrive.
