High Figures in Mexico Suggest Increase in COVID-19 Cases

Mexico registered its second consecutive day of more than 20,000 daily coronavirus cases on Saturday, suggesting an increase in infections in a country that is struggling in many areas beforehand with hospital service at the limit.

There were 20,523 new confirmed cases on Saturday, one after registering 21,366 infections in a 24-hour period. The figure is roughly double the rate of daily gains from just a week ago. Figures generally reported on weekends decline, suggesting that next week they could reveal even larger numbers.

The country also recorded 1,219 more deaths, close to the record. Mexico now adds almost 1.63 million total infections and more than 140,000 deaths in the pandemic.

In Mexico City, the current source of contagions in the country, 88% of hospital beds are occupied.
