Father decided to study at university with his autistic son: They will both graduate as lawyers

Luis Felipe Soares, a 46-year-old father from Vitoria, Brazil, entered law school just to accompany his son Lucas Weberling, 23, who was diagnosed with autism.

Throughout his entire elementary, middle, and high school education, Lucas suffered from bullying and was constantly abused by his peers due to his special condition.

For this reason, when Lucas told his relatives in 2016 that he wanted to be a lawyer like his mother, he asked his dad to accompany him in this important stage of his life, as he did not feel safe doing it alone after all that he suffered at school.

Luis did not hesitate to enroll with his son in the degree, which they studied at the Espírito Santo Law School in Brazil.

In love with the same career

At the beginning, the plan was to accompany him only for two months, while Lucas got used to the university environment and made new friends. However, over the course of the course they both made new friends and grew fond of the profession.

“I was very nervous and eager to go back to school, especially in an area that is so far from mine, since I am an exact graduate. But Lucas calmed me with his serenity. My goal was to study until the fourth period, the time necessary for him to socialize, but he did not let me give up and we were together until the end, “explained Luis Felipe to the Brazilian portal of UOL News.

Lucas’s condition affects him in the way he interacts with others, but Luis Felipe assured that “there was no difference”, and that “he was always another student in the class.”

Soon they will graduate from lawyers

When classes switched to online due to the coronavirus pandemic, her son missed all of his classmates.

“Now we are going to do the examination of the Brazilian Bar Association and Lucas wants to do a public examination. We will definitely support him,” added the father.

Father and son they are two proud graduates of law school and they hope to attend the graduation ceremony in February 2021 and take the examination of the Brazilian Bar Association.
