8 medical tips for rheumatism patients in winter

Istanbul / Muhammad Sheikh Yusuf / Anatolia

With the cold weather and the winter habits of staying at home and eating food, the pain of joint patients increases, which drives them to search for ways to relieve their pain.

Palestinian doctor Raafat Dahir, an orthopedic specialist at Medicana International Hospital in Istanbul, via Anatolia, offers 8 tips for relieving joint patients’ pain.

Dahir said that it is important to search for the causes of arthritis and joint pain in winter, including the change of weather and air pressure, which affects the muscles and joints and leads to changes in the fluids in the joints, which results in more pain.

He pointed out that “recent research has talked about the effect of the hormone serotonin, which controls the individual psychological state, as the level of the hormone decreases in winter, which leads to increased pain in the joints.”

The following are the 8 tips that Raafat Dahir gave:

1- Warming the body by wearing appropriate clothes, underwear, gloves and appropriate shoes, which contributes to raising the temperature in the muscles surrounding the joints, thus relieving pain and not occurring.

2- Drink warm water and drinks. As the temperature decreases, the body feels less thirsty, and the lack of fluids leads to cramps and tightness in the muscles, which results in pain around the joint, so it is important to drink warm fluids and water in an amount of two and a half liters per day.

3- Weight maintenance; Too much food and protein leads to an increase in the level of “uric acid”, which leads to diseases such as gout, and weight gain contributes to increased pressure on the joints, which exacerbates the pain in them.

4- Taking vitamins D, G, and C on a regular basis, in order to compensate for the deficiency caused by insufficient exposure to sunlight in winter, which leads to osteoporosis, and vitamin C deficiency leads to immune deficiency, This causes muscle cramps, and bone pain.

5- Exposure to psychological stress due to a lack of the hormone serotonin; This causes cramps and pain in the joints, so you must practice some hobbies that stimulate movement and improvement in the psychological state.

6- Maintaining a good sleep period, which leads to a relaxing body; Which prevents pain in the joints.

7- Massage around the joints with warm water at varying intervals. To prevent spasms in the muscles surrounding the joints and relieve pain.

8- Paying attention to using suitable shoes during sports, work and walking, as using inappropriate shoes leads to increased pain around the joints.
