This principle applies to many things in life, not just games. All the people who sit down for 3080 or whatever and then buy it at crazy prices. You can play literally anything high 1080p on an “old” 1070 that you can buy for less than 250 euros these days second hand. The people that really need 144hz 4k are a fraction of a fraction in the gaming market.
How many times do I see people buying upgrades that give them barely 20% more FPS in a game. If a game did 60fps or 72fps, you won’t notice. But that hole in your wallet, if you saved that up, you could do a much better upgrade down the line, for a cheaper price.

High at 1080P and all games is quite a meh statement. That is not the case (still have an old 1070). In addition, the high refresh rate gaming has become quite large in recent years on the PC market. Not everyone wants the absolute best bang for the buck. Nvidia and AMD also ship enough high-end cards, that it is relatively less, is not surprising as half PC gaming China on 1060s gamed in internet cafes etc.
Incidentally, the performance jumps were somewhat higher than 20% in the last releases.
Games these days just don’t push the graphics, to the point where we need specialties like ray tracing to push the FPS down on older cards so you upgrade. For what? Reflections that you see in the first 5 minutes but once you are in a game that you don’t even notice anymore.
RDR2, Cyberpunk, AC Valhalla, Division 2 etc and a shit load of games that do push the graphics and where a midrange card does not offer the optimal experience.
If you don’t see or notice the differences between ray tracing versus non ray tracing, you just miss the focus a bit or you don’t value it. Doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
Ditto with games … Pre-buying games and then you have states like Cyberpunk 2077 (and so many other games that are incomplete). It’s not like there aren’t 100 other games you can buy for a fraction of the price to keep you busy right now.
On PC Cyberpunk was easy to play at launch and for many, including myself, it offered a great experience in world building, story and just gameplay. Not perfect, but no game is perfect. In addition, not everyone wants to be destroyed in terms of story. Nice and fascinating that the game will only cost 20 euros in 2 years. As if that 50 euros (paid 40 yourself) for 60+ hours of entertainment is a lot of money.
It’s that damned hype that companies create on purpose to take money out of your pockets, that’s what you need to watch out for. Call me an old curmudgeon but if you play smart in life with a little patience and learn to put things into perspective, you can live a lot more “rich” on the same budget.
With that approach you can get everything cheap in life, but value is different for everyone. I enjoy gaming on a top of the line PC screen, GPU and having an extremely smooth experience. I like to spend my money on that. My demands are also constantly growing. I think games that I thought were super cool 5 years ago now are meh. Life is short, enjoy it.
