After two away successes in a row, FC Augsburg once again suffered a defeat on a foreign pitch. At SV Werder Bremen, the Fuggerstadt team lost 0-2 on Saturday afternoon. The FCA performed well over long distances – but had to accept a double blow in the neck shortly before the end.
After the 1: 4 defeat against VfB Stuttgart, coach Heiko Herrlich changed his starting eleven to four positions. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw returned after a yellow card suspension, and Mads Pedersen, André Hahn and Alfred Finnbogason were allowed to play from the start. Tobias Strobl and Florian Niederlechner took a seat on the bench, Iago (complaints in the neck area) was absent, as was Marco Richter (yellow-red suspension).
The FCA took command from the start on a foreign pitch. In the first half, the Fuggerstadt team had over two thirds of the ball possession at times, but initially couldn’t get through against low-ranking Bremer. The home side defended deep within their own half and offered Augsburg little space. The only good chance of the first round was preceded by a fatal bad pass from Marco Friedl. Alfred Finnbogason passed on Hahn, who shot just past the left in the penalty area from a central position (18th).

Otherwise the first 45 minutes did not offer any highlights. The FCA had a lot more from the game, but in the last third the red-green-whites lacked the punch and the necessary precision against lurking Bremer. A header from Theodor Gebre Selassie after one of the home side’s rare offensive trips was not a serious threat to the FCA goal (33rd).
Bremen came out of the break with more momentum. Maximilian Eggestein tried it from a distance (46th), shortly afterwards Felix Uduokhai blocked Jean-Manuel Mbom (49th). On the other side, Jiri Pavlenka had to make a long effort with a header from Daniel Caligiuri (50th). Because Werder now acted much more aggressively, there were more spaces in both directions. Reece Oxford shouldered the ball over the goal after a corner (63rd), on the other side Rafał Gikiewicz rescued Joshua Sargent (64th).

The shares of the game shifted more and more in the course of the second round in the direction of the hosts, who had now settled in half of the Fuggerstadters. While the FCA could hardly find relief, the pressure in Bremen increased. After the degrees of Friedl (78th) and Gebre Selassie (80th) still lacked the precision or the force, the ball wriggled a little later in the FCA case. A cross from Felix Agu involuntarily extended Oxford to the second post when attempting to clear it, where Gebre Selassie artistically and from close range made the 1-0 for Bremen (84th). And it got even worse, because only three minutes later Romano Schmid found Agu with his cross, who raised to 2-0 in front of Gikiewicz and thus opened the lid (87th).
In the end, Augsburg had to admit defeat to more effective Bremen players. On Wednesday (January 20, 8:30 p.m.), FCA will host Bayern Munich in the last game of the second half of the season.
