Since January 5, 2021, the informative and amusing documentary series “History of Swear Words“Seen on Netflix. Nicolas Cage (“Ghost Rider“, „Leaving Las Vegas“, „Con Air“) be won. It should have been easy money for the actor, because he doesn’t really have a lot to do. We definitely doubt that he was busy with the debut season for more than a day or two.

Sometimes the deliberately exaggerated performance of Cage, who plays with his eccentric image, even counts as a lowlight of the respective episode. Personally, I probably would not have needed it to take a look, but some viewers might even look through it on the thumbnail in the first place.

In any case, each of the six 20-minute episodes reveals the story of a word that was previously unknown to anyone. So it’s about the respective origin of the words, their use in pop culture and their scientific, but also cultural influences. The taboo words considered are for example fuck, shit, bitch, dick, damn and pussy. You can tell from the selection alone that some of them are more stigmatized than others. A damn these days is no longer as controversial or frowned upon as it is fuck, which also shows how colloquial language can develop.

The entertaining format may not reveal a deep linguistic treatise, but it is easy to look at it on the side and is often worth a laugh, especially due to the invited guests, who are a mixture of experts, historians and entertainers – and a bit of educational mission is hidden behind it . It also clears up some myths floating around some words.

For example Sarah Silverman, Nick Offerman, Jim Jefferies, Nikki Glaser, Joel Kim Booster, DeRay Davis, Open Mike Eagle, Patti Harrison, London Hughes, Zainab Johnson, Baron Vaughn and Isiah Whitlock Jr.
