Medals for the virtual New York Marathon arrived in Leipzig

Leipzig. They didn’t make it under the Christmas tree as announced, but in the New Year the coveted pieces reached their lucky collectors by post. “You’re really looking forward to it,” says Laufladen managing director Uwe Förster and proudly shows the medal for the virtual New York Marathon 2020 in the camera with his wife Kathrin Severin. Before Corona showed up and thwarted the plans of 65 Leipzigers, the 62-year-old tried and tested tour guide had sent 501 trade fair townspeople to the skyscraper metropolis in 14 years, and he successfully completed the running hit there eight times.

But this time, instead of 26 miles through the streets of the Big Apple, it was a good 42 kilometers through LE – 38 runners had a lot of fun on September 30 at the replacement for the New York Marathon in the trade fair city and at Markkleeberger and Cospudener See. The charity run was organized by Olympiasport Leipzig GmbH. The main drivers of the Charita event were presenter Roman Knoblauch, artist Michael Fischer-Art and DHfK ace Nic Ihlow. For the not in top form runners Uwe Fischer, his Kathrin and buddy Thorsten Knab, it was clear that they absolutely wanted to participate and a relay variant was agreed. In her group, epee fencer Artur Fischer celebrated his marathon premiere in 4:40 hours. “He fought his way through bravely,” said veteran Förster, praising the young FCL musketeer.

René Toussaint, team doctor for the DHfK handball team, and Jörg Behrends were also highly motivated. The two men have already been on course to New York twice. Co-supporter Volker Große from Markkleeberg provided bicycles and bicycle trailers for accompanying persons and food. Running enthusiasts defy the ongoing pandemic and wintry routes while jogging. Everyone wants to get back to competitive mode soon. Uwe Förster and his colleagues hope to be able to enjoy the 50th New York Marathon live on site.
