Weimar competition for young pianists canceled

Weimar / Berlin (MH) – The 6th International Franz Liszt Competition for Young Pianists will not take place. The competition that was originally planned for October 2020 and has since been postponed to March 2021 would have to be canceled “due to the still critical pandemic situation”, announced the Weimar Academy of Music on Friday.

“After weighing all the options, we decided with a heavy heart to cancel the Liszt competition,” said the vice-president for artistic practice of the university, Anne-Kathrin Lindig. “We cannot justify letting 50 to 60 children and young people with their parents from all over the world travel to Weimar in March.”

An international jury chaired by the Weimar piano professor Grigory Gruzman was to award main and special prizes with a total value of more than 20,000 euros. The next edition of the competition is planned for autumn 2023.

The International Franz Liszt Competition for Young Pianists was launched in 2005 by the Weimar University of Music. Like the Louis Spohr Competition for Young Violinists, the Liszt Competition is intended to provide an international platform for talented young instrumentalists. The Liszt Competition takes place every three years.
