Health – Frankfurt am Main – Despite Corona, more organ donors in Saarland – Health

Frankfurt / Main / Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) – Despite the corona pandemic, the number of organ donors in Saarland has increased slightly. As the German Organ Transplantation Foundation (DSO) announced on Thursday in Frankfurt, according to preliminary figures, 22 people in Saarland donated one or more organs after death in 2020. In 2019 the DSO counted 18 organ donors. Nationwide, the number remained almost constant: in 2020 it was 913 donors, in 2019 it was 932.

In the past year, according to the preliminary figures, 73 organs removed from the Saarland after the death of the donor (“post-mortem”) could be assigned to the international agency Eurotransplant. According to the DSO, that was more than in 2019, when 64 organs were passed on from the Saarland. Kidneys were donated most frequently, followed by livers, lungs, hearts and other organs.

According to preliminary figures, 65 organs were transferred in Saarland last year after a post-mortem donation, which was slightly fewer than in 2019, when 71 organs were transplanted. At the end of 2020, according to the DSO, there were still 9,200 patients on the waiting list for a transplant across Germany.
