In the sequel, the now 40-year-old played alongside the American president Donald Trump, who was recently heavily criticized. The allegations against the 74-year-old went so far that his appearances in films were also questioned.
For example, fans called for Trump to be cut from the movie “Kevin – Alone in New York”. In the brief cameo from 1992, the then real estate tycoon meets Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, at the Plaza Hotel. In a long coat and a red tie, Trump points the kid in the right direction and looks after the boy. Culkin, the main actor of the comedy, responded to the idea of a Twitter user to digitally replace Trump in the film with the 40-year-old actor: “Bought.” Another fan had already bothered to make Trump unrecognizable in the scene with Culkin and shared his work on Twitter. “By popular request, I removed Trump from Kevin Alone in New York,” he added. Culkin gave it a “Bravo” for it.
The graphic designer Max Schramp also published an explanatory video on YouTube. There he said that Trump’s permanent Twitter ban basically meant that he no longer existed. In this respect, it is only logical to also remove his trace from the classic film.
Cameo was a condition for filming permission
Trump, against whom a second impeachment proceedings have just been initiated, was removed from the short message service after his speech before the storming of the US parliament building because it feared further calls for violence, the reasoning said. However, there is also a background to the film “Kevin – Alone in New York”: The Plaza Hotel belonged to Trump from 1988 to 1995. In November, the director of the film, Chris Columbus, stated that Trump’s cameo was a condition for permission to shoot. On top of that, they would have had to pay to use the building, according to the filmmaker.
It’s not the first time Trump has been cut from the film. In December 2019, Canadian television showed a version that was already missing the hotel scene. At the time, CBC justified this by making cuts due to the short airtime – and distanced itself from allegations that the background was politically motivated. Apparently the material had already been processed by CBC in 2014, two years before Trump’s election as US president. Donald Trump Jr. commented on the cut on Twitter with the word “poor”.
