MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexico expanded its coronavirus vaccination campaign on Wednesday, as the nation records high numbers of daily infections.
Teams were deployed to vaccinate front-line health workers across the country, administering some 94,400 doses. In comparison, in previous days, the daily average was 4,000 injections.
The country still has a long way to go. There are 750,000 frontline health workers, each of whom requires two doses.
The vaccination campaign intensified a day after Mexico received a shipment of nearly 440,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, the largest shipment to date.
Authorities on Wednesday reported another sharp increase of 15,873 confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, putting the nation’s total infections above 1.57 million. There have been about 137,000 deaths due to the disease in the country.
