Whatsapp, beware of the false message: the fake renewal scam is back
As reported by Kaspersky has returned to shoot one scam email inviting users to renew their WhatsApp account not to lose messages, photos and videos already shared. A scam attempt that has been around for years, but which still today, unfortunately, manages to find someone who takes the bite.
It basically consists of a phishing email that has graphics that mimic the official one of the instant messaging platform and ungrammatical text. “Dear Customer, Attention! Your WhatsApp Messenger account will expire. Registration no. Will will be completed within 24 hours, renewal of subscription from 0.99 euros. Renew as soon as possible to avoid loss (photos, videos, messages). Check your account information by clicking on the link below“.
Online scams, never provide sensitive and banking data
This message is followed by the link “Verify your account“. If the user clicks on this link, he is sent to a Web page where he is asked if he wishes renew your WhatsApp account for one year, three years or five years for prices of 0.99 euros, 2.67 euros and 3.71 euros respectively.
To proceed with the “Purchase by extension”, therefore, you must enter your email and credit card details. The latter are precisely the data that the scammers aim for. In fact, if you provide such information, you risk seeing your current account emptied in a short time.
