Anticipating himself as the great winner of the 2020 film year, marked by the pandemic, Netflix announced on Tuesday the list of its premieres scheduled for 2021, with no less than 70 feature films and a shower of stars.
The ad is unusual for the video-on-demand platform, which generally only releases one movie at a time.
The company now far outstrips the output of all Hollywood studios.
The presentation comes just after that of the Warner Bros. studio, which to a general surprise announced that it would release simultaneously in theaters and on its HBO Max platform all its films scheduled for 2021, 17 in total.
From dramas to comedies, science fiction, horror and even western, the online video service has dabbled in the main genres of modern cinema, with some titles that can aspire to receive the most prestigious awards in cinema.
Netflix It only released the release dates for ten films, all scheduled between early January and mid-March.
Along with the list of films, the platform released a short promotional video highlighting the stars, with Gal Gadot (“Wonder Woman 1984”), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (“Fast and Furious” or “Jumanji”) and Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”).
The bet goes further and, in addition to them, releases films with Regina King, Adrien Brody, Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Octavia Spencer, Jeremy Irons, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, all Oscar winners.
As for the directors, among the signings the also Oscar-winning New Zealand Jane Campion, with “The Power of the Dog”, as well as the American actress Halle Berry and the playwright and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda (director of the musical “Hamilton”) stand out. , the latter two for the first time behind the camera.
Among the most anticipated feature films are “Don’t Look Up” by Adam McKay (“The Big Short” and “The Vice President”), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as “The Harder They Fall”, a western co-produced by rapper Jay -Z with a totally African-American cast.
Netflix It also seems to bet a lot on “Red Notice”, with Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, an action film whose budget would amount to 160 million dollars according to various US media.
Consulted by AFP, Netflix It did not specify whether these films will be screened in theaters.
