The Swiss handball players still make it to the World Cup (January 13th to 31st) in Egypt. The coronavirus upset the field of participants the day before the kick-off in favor of Switzerland.

The Swiss participation in the World Cup had become increasingly apparent on Tuesday. The national teams from the USA, the Czech Republic and Cape Verde provided information during the day about numerous team members infected with the corona and took action in the evening. In a first step, the Czech Republic informed about its withdrawal from the title fights, leaving the North Macedonians on standby up.

When the Americans withdrew a little later – they had initially pursued the plan to travel to Egypt with a rump team – the Swiss national team also got a quick kiss on the hand. The team of national coach Michael Suter will now inherit the place of the Americans in Group E and will probably meet Austria, France and Norway from Thursday.

The happy advancement of Switzerland is also a satisfaction. With the cancellation of the World Cup playoff games against Iceland, the Swiss had been deprived of their sporting opportunity to qualify for Egypt. While Switzerland only made it onto the standby list, two teams, Poland and Russia, received a wildcard for the World Cup, which were clearly worse classed at last year’s EM.
