‘Incorporation into our side’s EEZ without consultation’ Japan Maritime Security Administration’s survey ship eviction

According to the Coast Guard on the 12th, the survey ship’Soyo’ (昭洋) belonging to the Japan Maritime Security Agency left our EEZ at 4:24 pm on the same day.

On the 10th, at 11:55 pm, the coast guard discovered that a Japanese surveyor had conducted an ocean survey without prior consent from the Korean government at about 130 km southeast of Seogwipo, Jeju.

Since then, the Coast Guard has sent two 3000t-class guard ships alternately to monitor the Japanese survey ship in a state of “synchronized operation” (a type of operation that maintains a certain distance and monitors). The survey ship ignored the request of the Coast Guard and this afternoon this afternoon. It is known that it has conducted investigation activities. In response to our request that the Korean government’s prior consent was required, the Japan Maritime Security Agency responded, saying, “The EEZ of Japan is conducting a legitimate investigation.” According to the Japan Maritime Security Agency, the request for the suspension of investigation activities by the Korean Maritime Police Agency has been made since August last year. This is the second time.

The Japan Maritime Security Administration reportedly protested against the Korean side through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Maritime Security Administration has decided to continue the investigation until the end of February, as planned, despite a request from the Korean side to stop the investigation, and the possibility of re-entry to the EEZ is high.
