The first trophy of Italian football in 2021 will be awarded to Reggio Emilia Wednesday 20 January, between Juventus e Naples.
The Italian Super Cup, nominally last title of last season, will therefore renew the match between bianconeri and blues, the same teams that last June 17 raised the curtain on Italian football with the final of Italian Cup in Rome after the three-month interruption due to the pandemic of Coronavirus.
However, the challenge of the “Mapei Stadium” risked not being disputed, just like the championship match between two of the greatest rivals in Italian football, not played last October 4 and then transformed into a real diplomatic case first for the 3-0 at the table assigned to Juventus and then for the decision of Coni College to annul the sentence by ordering the recovery of the game.
As emerged on Monday, in fact, the president of Napoli Aurelio De Laurentiis had forwarded an official request to postpone the match even at the end of the season, a request promptly rejected by the League which confirmed the date and time (21) of the match scheduled in Emilia.
‘La Repubblica’ unveiled i three reasons they had pushed de Laurentiis to ask for the postponement of the game. The first would be linked tohigh number of Covid-19 cases in Emilia Romagna and in particular in Reggio Emilia, while the other two reasons are more closely linked to football.
First of all, the fact that the match, just like the last Italian Cup final, will have to be played without fans: De Laurentiis had hoped for the postponement to May in the hope that in four months the numbers linked to the pandemic will allow the possibility of filling at least part of the Reggio plant.
Finally, the economic damage linked to the absence of the public and the need to play in Italy for safety reasons: the turnover linked to the game is in fact 2.6 million, less than half compared to 5.8 million which had been produced by the last edition held in Saudi Arabia on 22 December 2019 and won by Lazio against Juventus itself.
However, all the reasons given by De Laurentiis have been rejected. At the moment, in fact, it is not possible to predict whether at the end of the season it will be possible to play in the presence of the public, not to mention that the calendar is already full, with Juve and Napoli competing in the Champions and Europa League, and theEuropean 2021 at the gates, they prevent the insertion of further dates in the calendar after the end of the championship, set for 23 May.
