Interest in chat apps Signal and Telegram has grown significantly in recent days after WhatsApp updated its terms and conditions.
Data from WhatsApp users will be automatically shared with Facebook’s data servers from next month. Richer user profiles can be built up with this. That kind of data is then used to present personalized advertising. Users must agree to the link to continue using WhatsApp.
In Europe this link is not allowed, but outside it it is. Privacy advocates advise users to to switch on alternative messaging services. Elon Musk and Twitter boss Jack Dorsey also came up with this advice.
Signal has welcomed 100,000 new users in the past few days alone, while Telegram recorded 2.2 million downloads.
