New twist in the conflict between the Professional Football League (LFP) and Mediapro. As a reminder, the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 broadcaster (830 million euros annually over the period 2020/2024) did not wish to pay its October deadline (172.6 million €), nor that of December (152.5 M €) and still hopes to negotiate a reduction in TV rights. To get out of the conflict, the conciliator Marc Sénéchal was dispatched by the commercial court of Nanterre. The latter was also present this morning during the board of directors of the League.
Labrune close to Sénéchal’s opinion, but …
According to the daily L’Equipe, Marc Sénéchal said he was still negotiating, but very close to the end of discussions with Mediapro. He was also very clear by exposing two theories: either the LFP accepts the conditions of Mediapro (that is to say an abandonment of the contract against the guarantee not to be sued), or it goes to the clash and the broadcaster then goes bankrupt. A long legal debate would then begin.
For Marc Sénéchal, the option to be favored would be to opt for an agreement with Mediapro, even if the conditions are not ideal, so that the LFP recovers its rights. The League would also be in the possibility of negotiating with Canal +, which is waiting for the situation to settle. L’Equipe adds that President Vincent Labrune would not be far from the conciliator’s vision, but would like to obtain financial compensation from Mediapro. Finally, the former OM boss indicated that a new board could be summoned on Friday to make a final decision if necessary. The official end date for conciliation is December 18.
