After an uneventful first half, Jadon Sancho (55th minute) provided the somewhat surprising tour of the guests. The preparatory work was a remarkable co-production by Erling Haaland and national player Marco Reus. For Sancho it was the second goal in the second game in a row, for Leipzig the first goal in the Bundesliga after 429 minutes. The first home defeat of the season was finally sealed by striker Haaland with a brace (71st / 84th). Alexander Sörloth’s (90th) connection was only cosmetics.
Captain Reus said on the sports show microphone: “That was a clear step forward for us today, and for me personally too. We are delighted that we made such a second half.” “All of us know that it was a very important game today. A game after which you can see which direction it will go this year”said Dortmund midfielder Emre Can on “sky”, “so it was crucial to win today.” Leipzig’s coach Julian Nagelsmann analyzed: “There were two different halves. In the first half we had a lot of the ball, but we lacked a bit of depth. In the second half we didn’t make a lot of good things from the first. We didn’t have the structure anymore. We had too many ball losses and Dortmund used them. “
Leipzig dominates in half one
BVB coach Edin Terzic trusted the same starting line-up that defeated Wolfsburg 2-0 last matchday. In Reus, Haaland and Sancho, all offensive stars were on the field, but Dortmund initially focused on goal prevention. Leipzig was much better in the game, had about 70 percent possession at times. However, the Saxons used the generous space on the ball too seldom and instead tried a quick direct game. Numerous bad passes in the last third were the result. A harmless header from Yussuf Poulsen (25th), who returned to the starting line-up, was the first attempt on goal.
Witsel injured replaced
Shortly afterwards, BVB had to cope with a setback. Axel Witsel’s left foot (28th) buckled without any opponent interference, the Belgian had to be out of the game. Emre Can came into play for Witsel, and with it a lot of force and drive for BVB’s game. This did not change anything in terms of the game until the break, Dortmund remained without a shot on Leipzig goal.
