With all the stuff surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, a lot of ghost stories have popped up on the web in recent weeks. That the necessary things have not gone well with the Polish developer, that is a fact. But a really good picture of what happened behind the scenes is hard to come by, so we have to rely on developers who are blown away.
This did a developer whose story was shared on GameFAQS and Reddit. So you could read some updates only later in the year and that the necessary content was dropped due to time, which will now be added as DLC. The person also claimed that Sony Japan furious would have been on the state of the game and the problems it has caused.
A plausible story in itself, given that it ties in with the current situation and the action that Sony has taken, for example. After all, they have removed Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store, a step that Sony hardly ever takes.
Yet all this turns out to be untrue. At least, CD Projekt RED says it doesn’t normally respond to rumors, but claims that the messages that have been circulating lately are incorrect. Given that it had quite a life of its own, they felt compelled to respond now.
“Normally we don’t comment on rumors but this time we wanted to make an exception as this story is simply not true.”
We already indicated that we take it with a grain of salt, but we should also note that the developer himself has not always been honest. This would fix the performance problems on the PS4 between the gold master and the release. This was promised to Sony, which they clearly have not kept.
Anyway, it is mainly a matter of time until, for example, Jason Schreier from Bloomberg comes up with an extensive reconstruction of how things could have gone so wrong. We will probably be able to learn more from that about how things went. It remains to be seen whether it will ever come, but given that this journalist has done this before and Cyberpunk 2077 is such a big title, we estimate the chances quite high.
A good example is the whole story about Anthem, which also had such a difficult development with a bad result. That piece was published on Kotaku. See here.
