Description sent by the project team. With a capacity of 62,062 people, the new stadium becomes London’s largest club stadium and, incorporating a fully retractable field, is the first in the world custom built to host football and NFL games.
The stadium has been designed to generate one of the best football atmospheres in the world, with uninterrupted lines of sight and spectators closer to the field than anywhere else in the UK. The bleachers are angled at 35 degrees, the steepest angle recommended by UK guidelines, to create a narrower and more atmospheric stadium that focuses towards the ‘home edge’ of the south, where 17,500 spectators will join together to generate a ‘ wall of sound ‘at the UK’s largest single tier booth.
The areas at the front of the booth, as well as the remote support section, have been future-proofed for a secure position, with a one-of-a-kind design that prioritizes safety and comfort alike. The rows of seats are separated by an ergonomic profile bar set at 900mm for clear sight lines. Each of the seats, providing the same levels of comfort and legroom as in all other areas of the stadium, is equipped with a padlock to ensure that it can be securely fixed in the upright position.
A concert hall-inspired acoustic setup, which amplifies noise within the stadium, will add to the atmosphere and spectator experience. Wireless connectivity is available throughout the venue and will allow fans inside the stadium to connect and share their live event experiences with other fans around the world.
The sculpted appearance of the stadium has become clear; wrapping and folding its way around the stadium before reaching the end of the house, where a glass facade arches upward to reveal the massive one-story house, and a curved roof, which merges with the stadium structure to create a clean and elegant cover over the seating bowl.
The façade is dynamic, sensitive to changes in light. During the day, the perforated screens on the façade partially hide what is going on inside, but at night they act as a lantern, highlighting the activity inside. A five-story-tall glass atrium at the south end will provide a new gathering place for local fans before and after the game, including an open food court bathed in natural light. This spectacular entrance provides a glimpse of life inside the stadium and has been designed to create a sense of arrival from the station.
