The shock treatment will have to have teeth …

The second wave of COVID-19 is brutal. To the great virus, the great remedies. Hence the re-containment and the curfew announced yesterday by Prime Minister François Legault.

The truth is that for a part of the population, the respect of the sanitary instructions and the reduction of the contacts took the edge as of this summer. Since then, trying to convince the recalcitrant, whether in good or bad faith, educated or not, has been futile. It’s so obvious.

Faced with the pandemic, Quebec, like elsewhere, has indeed become polarized. On the one hand, a majority behaves in a responsible and united manner. On the other hand, a sizeable minority refuses to do so.

Polarization

The government would have had to take note of this long before. We can be sorry. However, it is clear that in an emergency, it is necessary to force. What Mr. Legault qualifies as “shock treatment”.

We can debate the measures announced, but from face covering to curfew, to war as well as to war. Will we finally be able to slow the mad and devious spread of the virus? The next few weeks will tell.

The shock treatment will still have to have “teeth”. Unlike the holidays, the police will have to hand out hefty fines. This is the crucial stage of the fight, which we hope is almost final.

Vaccination

The Prime Minister, whose confidence level is still weathering the storm, nevertheless knows that time is running out. Deaths and hospitalizations are increasing. Many Quebecers are physically and emotionally exhausted.

And how many of us, eventually, will learn that we have cancer that is advanced but not detected in time due to covidial “shedding”? Hope is nevertheless there, but on two essential conditions.

That we actively protect each other. Let our governments swarm to vaccinate a majority of Canadians. Quickly, massively and on time for the second dose.

We have to get out of this crisis. Together. Point.
