Jerusalem, Jan 7 (EFE) .- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today condemned the “shameful” assault on the US Capitol by supporters of the outgoing president, Donald Trump.
“Yesterday’s assault on the Capitol was a shameful act and should be strongly condemned,” the president said during a joint press conference with outgoing US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who is on an official visit to Israel.
“Disorder and violence are the opposite of the values that we know Americans and Israelis cherish,” Netanyahu said, adding that he has no doubt that American democracy, which “has inspired millions around the world and in Israel “will prevail,” as it always has.
Mnuchin, for his part, also referred to yesterday’s incidents in Washington, which he characterized as “unacceptable.”
“Now is the time for our nation to come together and respect the democratic process in the United States,” he said.
These statements came within the framework of a visit by Mnuchin to Jerusalem after traveling to Khartoum yesterday to sign the so-called Abraham Accords, paving the way for the normalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and Sudan, which was mediated by Washington.
In addition to Netanyahu, other members of the Israeli Executive condemned the assault on the Capitol, including Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, who called on the “American people and their elected representatives” to defend the values on which his nation was founded.
On the other hand, the Minister of Health, Yuli Edelstein, took the opportunity to draw a parallel with the internal tensions in Israel: “We must calm down before things get out of control here too.”
The incidents in Washington occurred while Congress was meeting to ratify the results of the elections that gave the victory to Democrat Joe Biden, and left four dead, 14 police officers injured and at least 52 arrested.
