These and other scenes from the Capitol shook the world Wednesday after enraged protesters loyal to President Donald Trump stormed the corridors of the nation’s legislature in a brazen attempt to undermine democracy and prevent Democrat Joe Biden from replacing Democrat Joe Biden. Trump in the White House in two weeks.
The chaos interrupted Congress’ counting of Electoral College results, in which Biden beat Trump by 306 votes to 232.
In the morning, Trump held a rally before his supporters outside the White House and asked them to march to the Capitol. Hours later, after they had confronted the police and entered the building, he told them to go “home in peace.” He described the protesters as “very special people” whose cause he supported.
For his part, Biden asked from Wilmington, Delaware, that Trump go to national television and demand “an end to this siege.”
