Shocking scenes occurred in Washington that evening.
To prevent the planned confirmation of the election victory of the Democrat Joe Biden, hundreds of supporters of the previous President Donald Trump penetrated the Capitol in Washington.
Biden spoke of an “unprecedented attack” on US democracy: “I am really shocked and sad that our nation – so long beacon and hope for democracy – has arrived at such a dark moment.”
Sports stars condemn riots
Many sports stars did not leave the unworthy excesses indifferent.
“It’s an absolute shame what’s happening in the US Capitol,” wrote NBA star Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“How would you classify these people in the Capitol?” Asked Stan Van Gundy, head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, “Protesters? Rioters? Domestic terrorists? Anarchists? Violent extremists?”
Van Gundy spoke of a “shameful day for our country”.
Washington riot: “This is NOT America”
“Black people are stopped and won’t get out alive,” wrote legend Dwyane Wade.
“We can’t sleep in our own beds without being killed. We can’t jog without being killed. We can’t go down the street in our hoodies without being killed, but can you?” Wondered the 2006, 2012 and 2013 NBA champion and posted a photo of armed demonstrators in Parliament in Washington.
Isaiah Thomas, who is currently without a team, saw it similarly: “Our heads would have been blown away … That’s crazy.”
And record champion Bill Russell, who once won eleven titles with the Boston Celtics, wrote: “How long would it take to deploy the National Guard if they (the demonstrators, note d. Red.) would be black and how many would be dead? This is NOT America! “
The protests also have specific consequences for US sport: the college basketball game between UMass and George Washington was canceled due to the tense situation in the capital.
