The total number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in New York State in the United States rose to 8,590 on Monday, up from 8,521 on Sunday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Twitter.

Mr Cuomo had warned that an increase in the number of hospitalizations linked to the coronavirus was to be expected after the holidays, as people are used to traveling and congregating at this time of year, which could fuel the spread of the virus.
Separately, out of 152,402 COVID-19 tests carried out Monday in that state, 11,666 were positive, representing 8.31% of the total, up from 8.34% the day before, Cuomo reported, adding that the number of new ones deaths in 24 hours had fallen to 149 on Monday, from 170 on Sunday.
On Monday, the governor said: “We have daily monitoring of the hospital system throughout the state and we ask these hospitals to do what is necessary to the greatest extent possible and within their capacity to manage this upsurge” , he said.
He also said that a New York state laboratory had confirmed the first case of variant B.1.1.7 of the virus causing COVID-19, a variant discovered in the UK. According to him, a person from Saratoga County in New York has tested positive for this strain (of the virus) and that person has no known travel history.
As of noon Tuesday, the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University has recorded 38,599 deaths to date from the coronavirus in New York State, which is the state on most affected by the pandemic in the United States.
