‘The Croods: A New Era’: Nicolas Cage’s character Grug, from gorilla to teddy bear – movie news

Joel Crawford, director of DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Croods 2’, talks of the ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ actor’s ‘amazing’ job as the ‘pater families’ of the prehistoric clan.

The animated film from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation The Croods: A New Era, continuation of The Croods: A Prehistoric Adventure (2013), has been released in Spanish theaters on December 23 and, since then, has become the favorite choice of viewers. The sequel was directed by the newcomer in the feature film Joel Crawford (Trolls: Holidays), which has once again featured voices such as Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone or Ryan Reynolds for the main cast. In fact, Crawford has underlined the work of the interpreter of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) as Heather, ‘pater families’ of the prehistoric clan, who Go from gorilla to teddy bear when he talks about his own.

In this second part, Heather (Nicolas Cage), Ugga (Catherine Keener), Eep (Emma Stone), Chico (Ryan Reynolds), Thunk (Clark Duke), Sandy (Kailey Crawford) y Abu (Cloris Leachman) don’t have to worry that the world is going to end or, in other words, they are not in constant danger of death. But that does not mean that they continue to have their concerns, such as hunting in a group to feed themselves or finding a home in which to shelter. This is how they know the MasmejorPhil (Peter Dinklage), Hope (Leslie Mann) and her daughter Alba (Kelly Marie Tran) -, a family more evolved than them, but also less united. Although with misgivings at first, both learn to value themselves.

The director and producer of ‘The Croods: A New Age’ were inspired by their childhood to explore this theme of the film

Grug is still stubborn and overprotective, especially when he learns that his eldest daughter Eep (Stone) and newcomer Chico (Reynolds), completely in love, are thinking of going on their own to found their own clan. But, deep down, yesYour insecurities are born from the desire to protect your family and keep it close, which is revealed when meeting the most advanced Masmejor. And Crawford took advantage of the situation to make the most of Nicolas Cage’s comic side. He throws himself into the ring and makes discoveries in his own performance that surprise me, and I think he does too “explains the director in the production notes. Whether it’s spontaneously singing a line of dialogue or being overwhelmed by emotion and speechless when Grug talks about his daughter, these are always character choices that are totally relevant to the moment. “.

Grug, resistant to change, also evolves

If Grug faced Chico’s arrival and even had his first idea beyond staying in the cave in The Croods: A Prehistoric Adventure, here the character continues to evolve despite his resistance to change. And in that development the work of Cage has been fundamental, incredibly versatile for the director of the film. “It’s amazing to watch your process”, keep going. “Connect with unique moments and personalities, sometimes even channeling other iconic actors […] When Grug begins to reminisce about the first time he ate a banana, I played a tune on Ennio Morricone’s harmonica to inspire that nostalgic moment he was looking for. Nick instantly identified her with the movie from [Sergio] Leone Until His Time (1968) and said: ‘Ah… Henry Fonda. Got it now’. And she morphed into this version of Fonda, which was an amazing thing to watch.“.

‘The Croods: A New Era’: Croods vs. Masmejor and the importance of family, keys to the sequel

As Crawford sums up, the protector of the Croods is a burly and bulky caveman.. But that entire facade collapses at a stroke due to the love he feels for his family, including Abu (Leachman) herself, although it may not seem like it. “Nick used that and began to read his speeches in a very emotional way. This big gorilla turns into a cuddly teddy bear when he talks about his family.”. Cage himself agrees with the director that, deep down, The Croods: A New Era, it’s all feeling: “The way of working with Joel and Mark [Swift, el productor] and the entire production team on this sequel is perceived in the spirit of the film itself: a great dose of energy with a buffoonish touch, with absolute inventiveness and freedom and … a lot of heart“.
