LIVE | Johnson: 1.3 Million People Vaccinated in UK | Inland

In the United Kingdom, more than 1.3 million people have now been vaccinated against Covid-19. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this at a press conference on Tuesday.

Johnson said that because of the vaccinations, nearly one in four people from the most vulnerable groups will have “significant immunity” within two to three weeks. The prime minister said that with the vaccinations he wants to “place an invisible shield around the elderly and vulnerable.”

In the UK, 60,916 new infections and 830 deaths from Covid-19 were reported on Tuesday. It is the first time since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, that more than 60,000 infections have been reported in the country over a 24-hour period. Johnson said the number of corona patients in hospitals in England is 40 percent higher than during the first peak in April.

Johnson announced on Monday that the whole of England will go into lockdown again to bring down the high number of corona cases due to a highly contagious variant of the virus. Most students will be dependent on distance learning from Tuesday and working from home will be the norm again. People are only allowed outside for groceries, sports or essential work.

Johnson did not discuss the duration of the lockdown in England on Tuesday. He said this depends on many factors. The prime minister mentioned, among other things, the speed with which the vaccination plan can be implemented and the extent to which people comply with the corona rules.
