The child died at the end of last week, the RIVM spokesperson reports. It is the first time in our country that a child infected with corona between 0 and 4 years has died.
‘Very sad’
For privacy reasons, RIVM does not want to provide more information about the deceased baby. It can be concluded from the registration that it was a boy. A spokeswoman for the institute calls the death ‘very sad’.
She cannot say what ‘underlying suffering’, as the RIVM calls serious conditions, the baby suffered. “It was not a healthy baby”, is all she can say about it.
‘No extra risk’
The death of the child does not mean that children are now suddenly more at risk from the corona virus, said the spokeswoman. According to her, there is no reason to fear this.

In general, corona infections are mild in children and adolescents. Deaths among very young children who have contracted the virus are extremely rare. Still, it does happen occasionally. Other countries where deaths of babies suffering from Covid-19 have been reported include the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa.
Teenagers died
As far as is known, two teenagers who were infected with corona have died. In both cases it concerned boys. The boys were between 15 and 19 years old. The deaths were in April and October. They too had other health problems.
