Former Dota 2 E-Sports Tournament Champions Suspended After Match Fixing | NOW

The Newbee e-sports team is never allowed to participate again Dota 2tournaments, after being caught match-fixing. Game developer Valve reports this on Chinese social media.

Both the team and current players Moogy, Aq, Wizard, Waixi and Faith have been banned from the Dota Pro Circuit, which hosts all the major championships in the game.

The Chinese Newbee won the game tournament The International in 2014, where a prize pool of more than 5 million dollars (4.12 million euros) was won. In the years that followed, several cash prizes were won. In 2017, the team reached second position on The International, for a price of nearly $ 4 million.

Moogy had been part of the team since 2016, after which Waixi joined the lineup in 2018. Aq, Wizard and Faith were only added in 2019.

Also individual suspensions

The players have also been individually suspended, which means they are no longer allowed to participate in individual teams. This affects Aq, Wizard and Waixi who left after a fuss in 2020.

The team was blacklisted by the Chinese Dota 2 Association last year after suspiciously winning against another team. According to the Chinese authority, there was match fixing.

The case was sent to Valve Software for investigation, which is responsible for the Dota Pro Circuit and all major international competitions. The latter has now decided to go along with the decision of the Chinese authority.

Dota 2 is a popular game among e-athletes, with the biggest prizes being awarded during The International. In 2019 the highest prize went to the European team OG, which won 13 million euros. Last year, the tournament was canceled due to the corona pandemic.
