Most wanted to prevent the negative news from outbreaks of infection after church services.
Despite falling membership numbers in the established large churches, the advisors observe a great need for meaningful offers. “In times of crisis, the desire for support and orientation is more pronounced,” explained Pohl. Some people wanted a few complexity-reducing and black and white worldviews. “Some neo-religious groups represent precisely these worldviews, which are black and white.”
According to Jennifer Neumann, a consultant at Sekteninfo Berlin, some groups also attract attention “by playing with people’s fear”. For some people, the current situation is so stressful that they join problematic offers – they hoped for relief. However, the Berlin sect experts cannot see any major changes in the number of requests for advice. As in the previous year, they held around 600 advice and information meetings.
