DFB Cup: VfL Wolfsburg welcomes Schalke, women against Bremen or Meppen

Difficult but feasible lot for VfL Wolfsburg: The Bundesliga team has to play against FC Schalke 04 in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. However, it is not yet entirely sure who the women’s team will meet in the quarter-finals, it will be against the winner of the still to be played game between the two promoted teams Werder Bremen and SV Meppen. That was the result of the draw on Sunday afternoon, ex-ski jumper Sven Hannawald acted as the lottery ticket.

In the first round of the competition, the VfL men prevailed 4: 1 against regional division Union Fürstenwalde, in the second round the Wolfsburg team switched off one day before Christmas Eve second division SV Sandhausen (4: 0) – now the next opponent is Schalke firmly. However, the Royal Blues have been waiting for a success in the league for 30 (!) Games. In the cup, on the other hand, it worked twice this season for the Royal Blues – but each time against lower-class opponents. VfL only had to play twice against Schalke as a Bundesliga club in the cup – on January 30, 2008, the Wolfsburg team also prevailed 5-3 in the round of 16 after penalties, and on February 7, 2018 there was a 0-1 defeat in Gelsenkirchen in the quarter-finals.

For the Wolfsburg women it’s either against Werder Bremen or SV Meppen – VfL is the clear favorite against both teams as defending champions. The game between Bremen and SV could not be played on December 5th due to two positive Covid-19 tests among Werder Bremen players, the new date is January 30th. In the first two rounds, the VfLerinnen didn’t let anything go, initially winning 11-0 at VfL Bochum, and at the beginning of December they beat MSV Duisburg 3-1 in the round of 16.

The men’s round of 16 will take place on February 2nd and 3rd, the quarter-finals are scheduled for March 2nd and 3rd, the semi-finals for May 1st and 2nd, and the final in Berlin on May 13th. The VfL women will play their quarter-finals on March 20 or 21. The semi-finals will take place on April 3rd and 4th, before the final in Cologne is scheduled for May 29th.
