Scientists Predict ‘Disease X’ to be Next Pandemic

Jakarta

Scientists predict that COVID-19 will not be the last pandemic humanity will face. In the future, various infectious diseases which are now called ‘Disease X‘very likely to emerge.

Dr. Kenneth Iserson, professor emeritus from the University of Arizona, told The Straight Times that the prediction that a number of infectious diseases has the potential to become ‘Disease X’. Disease X itself is a term for an infectious disease that is unknown to humans.

“It is possible that other unknown infectious diseases are already in circulation and could have devastating implications,” said Dr Iserson, quoted by The Straight Times.

The world’s response in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Dr. Iserson, shows disparity and incompatibility. According to him, the world has “not learned much” in preparing for the next pandemic.

Disease X is a term used by WHO to describe a variety of deadly pathogens, including SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and Ebola, which have received top priority in research because of their potential to cause a pandemic.

COVID-19 itself is Disease X which caused the world to fall into crisis in 2020.

President of the Public Health Foundation in India, Dr K Srinath Reddy, said vaccines were not enough. According to him, vaccines and treatment are more reactive than preventive or preventive measures.

“They are not a guarantee of long-term protection. Microbes also learn to mutate. More importantly, new pandemics can start to emerge and wreak havoc before we develop vaccines or test drugs to fight them,” said Dr Srinath.

According to Dr. Iserson, active international surveillance is the best anticipation that can be done. He said China, the Amazon basin and central Africa were some of the hotspots that needed to be observed.
